Annual Symposia

Our symposia have become part of the living tradition of our Theological College welcoming a framework for scholars interested in the Church fathers and mothers, irrespective of their field of expertise, academic affiliation and denominational background. This aspect is evident, for instance, in the diverse expertise of the keynote speakers and contributors to our previous symposia, whom we acknowledge with gratitude -- an expertise which spans from dogmatic theology to ethics and Christian education, from early Christian studies to philosophy, from classical studies to Church history, and from scriptural exegesis to liturgics and patristic studies.

The Development of our Symposia

Faculty Meetings and Strategic Vision [St. Andrew’s Annual Symposia > Annual Symposia > Faculty Meetings and Strategic Vision]

Late 2008

Faculty Meetings and Strategic Vision

With the blessing of the late Archbishop Stylianos, College Dean, a group of full-time lecturers and staff of St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College held a series of meetings toward the end of 2008. The purpose of these meetings was to analyse the College’s current situation and develop a strategy for its improvement across several areas: scholarly, missionary, pastoral, and spiritual formation. One of the key outcomes was the idea of organising a series of public academic lectures intended to share the Faculty’s scholarly work and research interests with a broader audience beyond students and alumni.

2009

Inauguration of the St Andrew’s Patristic Symposium

Given the College’s ecclesial and traditional character, it was decided that the area in which the Faculty could make a genuine and original contribution was Patristics—the study of the Holy Fathers, their meaning and legacy. At the proposal of the faculty group, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos approved the establishment of the inaugural St Andrew’s Patristic Symposium in 2009, dedicated to St Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia (d. 379).

New Conference Format

From 2012 onward, the Symposia adopted the form of two-day academic conferences, providing a more concentrated and collaborative setting for scholarly exchange.

Alternation with Theology Symposia [St. Andrew’s Annual Symposia > The Development of our Symposia > Alternation with Theology Symposia]

2014

Alternation with Theology Symposia

Following the sixth edition in 2014, Archbishop Stylianos granted his blessing for the St Andrew’s Patristic Symposia to alternate biennially with the newly established Theology Symposia. This decision reflected a broader vision: to present the full richness of Orthodox tradition, encompassing both the heritage of the past and the living witness of the present.
